IGN recently caught up with producer Frank Beddor in regards to the adaptation of the Monopoly board game for the big screen. In the exclusive interview, he elaborated on the story that was originally pitched to Hasbro & director Ridley Scott to get the project off the ground. Check it out below:

The story revolves around “lovable loser who lives in Manhattan, works in a real estate company, terrible at his job. But he loves to play Monopoly. One night, he brings all his friends over to his apartment – he still lives with his parents, of course – and he wants to break the world’s record for Monopoly. They’re in the middle of the game and they’re teasing him because he’s talking about the love of his life that he never asked out, this girl from high school, and there’s a big fight and everybody goes home and he’s left holding a chance card.”

“He wakes up in the morning, all groggy, and he goes out to buy a cup of coffee. He reaches into his pocket and all this Monopoly money falls out. He’s embarrassed and apologizes, but the girl takes the money and gives him change. So he walks outside and where is he? He’s in the middle of Monopoly City. And through circumstances, he ends up taking on the evil Parker Brothers in the game of Monopoly for real. So all of these characters from his life come into play – a la The Wizard of Oz. My tag line, which Hasbro loved, was: ‘Everything you need to know about life, you can learn by playing Monopoly.’”

Once the project got moving, he departed the project. So only time will tell what the actual story has evolved into.
